Katie and Kimble: A Ghost Story – Book Review and Giveaway
June 6, 2009 by Moomettesgram
Filed under Reviews & Buzz, giveaways, leisure
<
Schools will soon be out of session for the summer here in New England. In many parts of the country, school’s out already!
My girls were always sent home with the required book reading lists. I always encouraged some “extra reading” of books of their own choosing.
If you follow along on my other blogs, you’ll know that at one point I almost became a Reference Librarian.
I’m delighted to have the opportunity to have reviewed Katie & Kimble, “A Ghost Story“ to recommend this parenting tip to you just in time for your child’s summer reading list or leisure time reading!
Katie & Kimble “A Ghost Story” is Book 1 in a Series by Linda Thieman.
Nine-year-old Katie Russell and her family LOOK like a normal family. But the Russells don’t know they are living with Kimble, the ghost of a 10-year-old girl. That is, until Katie discovers Kimble and the two of them set off on a quest to find out what happened to Kimble’s mother.
A Ghost Story is recommended for ages 7-10. The print is large enough for young eyes. The book is written in a conversational tone, with lots of back and forth bantering.
There are several black and white illustrated photos. Book 1 of the series has 11 chapters, and 106 pages – enough to keep the kids occupied for awhile once they get into the story!
If you homeschool, make sure to add this charming mystery book to your child’s reading list this summer!
Available on Amazon
ISBN-10: 0-09794396-1-2
ISBN-13: 978-0-9794396-1-2

The Mother-In-Law Manual: Proven Strategies For Creating Healthy Relationships With Married Children – Book Review and Giveaway
June 2, 2009 by Moomettesgram
Filed under Reviews & Buzz, baby boomer, giveaways, leisure

The Mother-In-Law’s Manual
This past weekend was quite special for my husband and I. Our daughters hosted a Surprise 35th Wedding Anniversary party for us on Sunday. It’s just mind-boggling how quickly the time went by!
One of the cards we received was from my late-mother-in-law (really, no joke.) To appreciate this, you have to understand that my husband and I have been tending flower beds at her grave site for many years. My sister-in-law’s a graphic artist and marches to the tune of a different drummer. She felt that Mom would want send her Best Wishes.
But first, a little bit of background. My husband’s mother and I got along tremendously, even before she became my mother-in-law. She was a “mompreneur” and female business owner long before the term became fashionable. I worked side-by-side next to her in the cheese and gourmet shop that she owned before and after my husband and I married. After we had kids, my mother-in-law babysat and provided daycare when I returned to work full time.
Fast forward, and I am now a mother-in-law. I like to brag that I hand-picked my charming son-in-law. From the day I met him my Sixth Sense told me that he was “the one” and would make the perfect husband for my daughter.
Life is more complicated now, and when I was given the opportunity to review The Mother-In-Law’s Manual by Susan Abel Lieberman, Ph.D.
“Proven Strategies For Creating And Maintaining Healthy Relationships With Married Children.”
OK, I’ve been the daughter-in-law, and came through that relatively unscathed, most likely because I was the favorite. Actually, I’m the only remaining daughter-in-law after 35 years, because everyone else got divorced.
Not everything is always rosy here in Dysfunction Junction, Connecticut. We have the dubious honor of having coined the term “Bridezilla“. Now that I’m the mother-in-law, I need to find out what I’m
- a) either doing right or
- b) what I’m doing wrong, and what can I do to make it right
The Mother-in-Law’s Manual speaks to why so many well-intended mothers sometimes miss the mark, how expectations, conscious and unconscious, can lead them astray and how their assumptions can result in painful mistakes.
Chapters include:
- *No rules – but seven mother-in-law maxims to guide good relationships
- *Ways to approach children when mothers-in-law think they may be making a marital mistake
- *How to think about grand parenting
- *What mothers-in-law might consider about their won aging
- *An overview of type and temperament to help explain the differences among family members that can seem purposefully irritating when they are hard-wired personality differences
Included in the book are comments and secrets from mother-in-laws of every color, race, class and disposition. I especially liked one chapter that discussed how as mother-in-laws, we have to give up some assumptions about how incredibly wise and useful we are in our childrens’ lives.
If there’s an upcoming Wedding or Bridal Shower in your family’s future, give this wonderful book as a gift! Share it with your daughter, sister, niece or best friend!

EXERGEN TemporalScanner Artery Thermometer – Review and Giveaway (CLOSED)
May 30, 2009 by Moomettesgram
Filed under Reviews & Buzz, baby boomer, giveaways, health

My regular readers are aware that I am on Granny Daycare duty during most of the week.
The last 10 days have really put me to the test. Slugger, my 9 month old grandson, had his 9-month checkup recently, and received an immunization.
The next day, he came down with an extremely high fever of 103, along with associated teething pain and diaper rash.
To make a long story short, after multiple phone calls and trips to the doctor’s office, for the next 10 days he was home with prescribed antibiotics for a double ear infection, sore throat, yeast infection, runny nose, and possible upper respiratory infections. Everybody took turns staying home with him – me, Grandpa, my younger daughter as well as his mom and dad. There’s nothing like having a sick kid in the house. You just feel so badly for them, as it’s really difficult to communicate just “where it hurts.”
As a parent and grandparent, I have a pretty good idea, but the most accurate measurement of when to call the doctor is by taking a child’s temperature.
Exergen TemporalScanner
I’ve recently had the opporunity through Mom Fuse to review the Exergen TemporalScanner.
The Exergen TemporalScanner is an infrared thermometer that captures temperature by scanning the heat that comes off a person’s forehead (via the temporal artery).
It’s non-invasive, easy-to-use (only takes 2 seconds) and extremely accurate. Similar to gliding your hand across a child’s forehead, the Exergen TemporalScanner gauges body temperature by capturing the naturally emitted heat from skin over the temporal artery, which runs across the forehead and is directly connected to the heart via the cartoid artery.
How I wish something like this was around when I was a young mom! This high-tech thermometer is a great tool for Dr. Mom and for new/expecting parents. Since it’s non-invasive, there are no ears and no rears and parents don’t have to go through the painful experience of taking their sick toddler’s temperature . Do you ever feel like you need a helper with an extra set of hands to help you hold your moving baby or toddler?
Two dozen studies were conducted to test the accuracy and reliability of this thermometer, and almost 50 percent of hospitals and pediatricians are using the Exergen TemporalScanner as well as recommending it to parents everywhere.
Features include:
- Only thermometer manufactured in the United States
- Environmentally Friendly-No Mercury
- Automatic Shut Off after 30 seconds
If you’re a mom, grandmom or daycare provider, put this on your list of must-haves for the First-Aid kit!
It’s also a great gift for the new mom-to-be for Baby Showers.
Available at Amazon and at WalMart, Walgreens, Costco, Babies R Us, Toys R Us and Sam’s Clubs nationwide.
Suggestion Retail: $50
For additional information, visit www.temporalscanner.com

Fasta Pasta Microwave Cooker – Review
May 30, 2009 by Moomettesgram
Filed under Reviews & Buzz, cooking, food

Do you ever come home from the office and face getting dinner on the table in a hurry? Perhaps you have to run the kids out to the next lacrosse or baseball practice, dance lesson or choir practice.
If you work from home, cooking dinner may be even more of a challenge if you weren’t able to leave the house to pick up what you need.
Every Monday and Wednesday I have to get dinner ready by 5:45 pm for my family as my charming son-in-law plays softball at 6:15 – talk about a short time frame! Any type of pasta main meal was always my fall-back dinner.
Fasta Pasta Microwaver Cooker
Thanks to Mom Fuse, I’ve had the opportunity to review rel=”nofollow”Fasta Pasta, a revolutionary microwave cooker that’s an entirely Made in the USA product that cooks al dente pasta in 15 minutes!
At first I was sceptical, thinking, I’ve been cooking pasta in a boiling pot of water for over 35 years, so how can anyone improve on this method? Well, they did, and I am a believer now!
This “As Seen On TV“ Fasta Pasta cooker is really easy to use, and cooks any type of pasta – linguine, spaghetti, lasagna noodles, shells and ziti. It can also be used to microwave vegetables and used as rice cooker.
There are holes to measure serving sizes (for spaghetti), and there’s also a colander/strainer to drain the water once the pasta is cooked. No more lifting heavy pots, with chances of spilling boiling water. Because you use only a maximum of 2 cups of water to cook the pasta, the Fasta Pasta is an environmentally Green product since it uses less water, thus, helping to save the environment
Features Include:
- Made Entirely in the USA -BPA free (Recycle5 symbol stamped on bottom)
- Inventor insists on Helping Support American-made products
- Cooks food even without a microwave turntable
- Dishwasher Safe
I also received a Fasta Pasta cookbook featuring fast and easy recipes for complete meals that can be cooked in 15 minutes or less.
I pride my reputation for reviews in that I’m a Baby Boomer Grandma Who’s Been Around the Block. I can honestly say that Fasta Pasta will become one of my most frequently used kitchen items.
Do you know a recent graduate who’ll be going off to college this year? This would make the perfect gift! It’s also a great gift for moms, daughter, grandparents and the RV and boating crowds!
For More Information: Fasta Pasta
Available on Amazon and in select kitchen shops.
Don’t miss this one.

Baby Banana – Debi Derryberry’s New CD – A Review and Giveaway
May 23, 2009 by Moomettesgram
Filed under Reviews & Buzz, baby boomer, giveaways, leisure, toddlers
We have a large collection of CD’s in our house, as the whole family enjoys listening to different types of music.
Of course, like any family, our tastes in music are … shall I say, different? My husband still likes hard rock, while I tend to go with almost anything, except hard rock. My tastes in music have evolved over the years.
My daughters listen to whatever genre the 20-somethings listen to, yet have adapted to many of the styles of music that I’ve introduced them to. These include Celtic, Broadway, Country, New Age, Classical, Folk, and the list goes on.
Now, enter the grandchildren. Since I am now “Granny Daycare” at day’s end, I need to (again) have some tunes on hand that will take the edge off between picking up the little darlings from daycare, and waiting for their ‘rents to arrive to collect them and take them home.
Baby Banana CD
I’m delighted to have the opportunity to let you know about Baby Banana, the most charming and entertaining CD that I’ve recently had the chance to review!
Award-winning singer/songwriter and acclaimed voice-over artist Debi Derryberry (the voice of Nickelodeon’s Jimmy Neutron), has launched My Baby Banana, an interactive website which brings the delightful world of Baby Banana, his family and friends to life.
Baby Banana is a tasty blend of calypso, reggae, jazz and folk by acclaimed entertainer Debi Derryberry, featuring her original character Baby Banana and his family in their tropical fantasy world!
The new track’s on Debi Derrberry’s Baby Banana are:
- I Wish You Could Fly With Me – a beautiful Ballard evoking the joy Baby Banana feels as he soars high above the ground, featuring Derryberry backed by melodious violin and keyboard solos
- Happiest Day – a fun fusion of calypso and Southern boogie, celebrating family love and togetherness
- Ooodle the Orangutan – a playful jazz-themed ode to Baby Banana’s special young friend, Oodle, which also pays tribute to this endangered species
- Tropical Fruit – a mouth-watering calypso/reggae salute to mango, papaya, and other healthy, natural deductibles
- I’m a Chameleon – a new version of Debbi’s popular song, featuring lyrics in both English and Spanish.
Besides these engaging tunes, there’s also a Bonus Spoken Book to read along to your child. ‘Lil Moomette, however, just spent the entire time twirling around the living room with her interpretation of dance! It was so cute to watch! I would have video taped it, but we ran out of clean clothes….and she was just in her diaper! (Memo to mom…send over more spare clothes!)
Be sure to check out the website, which features the premiere of four brand new, toe-tappin’ music videos, the fun-and-music-filled site celebrates the adorable Baby Banana character with original games, songs, tasty rotating kids’ recipes, family activities, a blog – and more!
This would make a wonderful addition to your private, or daycare, homeschool collection, or as a birthday gift for someone special!

Skinny Cow Frozen Snacks – A Review
May 22, 2009 by Moomettesgram
Filed under Reviews & Buzz, food, leisure

Most of my regular readers know that I’m a New England native. For those of you who are new here, I live in Connecticut.
With summer fast approaching (in some places faster than others!), it means that the time has almost come for some of our favorite activities: going to the beach or pool, grilling on the barbecue, having a picnic, and of course, enjoying ice cream. And, in my family, eating ice cream is primary among them.
Now, we New Englander’s are basically no different than anybody else, with the exception that we have more snow and ice, and a shorter period of warm weather than readers may have who live in other climates.
I have a sweet tooth, and honestly can say that ice cream treats are high up there on the must-have list of things I like to eat.
Since I live in a quaint New England town, we have this cute little ice cream shoppe (we spell shop like this in New England, because it’s so …quaint) in the old part of towne (same thing) where there’s cobblestones, gas light lamps, and a towne green. A few summers ago, my husband and I were going down for our my fix every night. I’d get my favorite treat, but sometimes my husband would pass. He exercises quite a bit of self-control.
At the end of the summer, I think I tried close to every flavor there was…and it showed. I had put on “several” pounds. Luckily, there are low-fat options that provide a cool treat any time of the year.
I’ve been asked by Mom Central to give you the skinny about offerings from Skinny Cow.
My favorite are the chocolate low-fat ice cream sandwiches, which are a great way to enjoy ice cream as part of a healthy lifestyle. With only 150 calories and 2 grams of fat, we now don’t have to feel guilty about Skinny Cow ice cream sandwiches when reaching into the freezer for a snack.
The light and creamy frozen treats come in seven different flavors, including cookies ‘n cream, chocolate peanut butter, and mint, which are not only indulgent but remind us of carefree summer days. Not to mention, these sandwiches taste anything but low fat!
My new favorite just might become the vanilla and mint dippers. Each pop has only 80 calories and 3g of fat!
I can still take a walk down to the towne green and sit in the gazebo while admiring the goings-on about town, but I”l be heading home to reach into my freezer for a Skinny Cow treat! I might even let you see “before” and “after” photos of my diet adventures at the end of the summer!

Mamapedia – The Wisdom of Moms
May 18, 2009 by Moomettesgram
Filed under Blogvertorial, baby boomer, health, toddlers
As a Mom of two grown daughters, I certainly have experience when it comes to tending to the needs of sick kids. You can say I’ve “been there, done that.” I learned to recognize illness symptoms in my babies from both my own mom and my mother-in-law, both who shared their parenting tips with me and taught me well.
Now that I’m a baby boomer and take care of my grandkids after daycare ends as well as when I babysit on weekends when their parents enjoy dining out, I’m still on the lookout for signs of illness if the kids tend to be fussy. My oldest daughter is constantly on the phone with me, picking my brain, and I’m more than happy to share my wisdom with her.
Ranging from how to deal with a newly discovered allergy to deciding on the safest car seat for your kids, moms take on the important task of family decision-making everyday.
Advice, however, does not always prove easy to come by in our time-crunched lives. Perhaps you have even had a question that you would rather not discuss with your friends and family, but still need the answer to. In comes Mamapedia providing all these answers aggregated in a single destination.
Mamapedia enables you to search answers for your most pressing questions, such as childhood crushes, renting a house, and summer camps, to get empathetic and insightful answers from moms around the country. A virtual encyclopedia of Mothers’ wisdom, Mamapedia allows you to quickly navigate through thousands of diverse categories to find the thoughtful, sympathetic-and most importantly-helpful answers to all of your questions.
For example, the Health category is broken down and searchable by topics such as:
- Bladder and Kidney
- Learning Issues
- Dental Health
- Vision
- Skin
- Weight Management
- Preventative Care
You will see the responses and answers, and also be able to “vote” whether the answer was helpful to your question or not.
Mamapedia brings millions of women together online, both nation-wide and in our own communities, so we can help each other tackle those difficult parenting questions or even just give recommendations on our favorite pediatricians, playgroups, and kid-friendly restaurants.
