Bean Appetit: Childrens Cookbook Review and Giveaway
Hip and Healthy Ways to Have Fun with Food
Bring Kookiness to the Kitchen
As any grandmom knows, kids learn through emulation – watching and imitating the actions of others. That’s why it’s a good thing to always strive to be a good example.
For me, I learned to cook by watching my mom and aunts who passed down many of the traditional Polish recipes that I learned to love as a child. I’ve since passed down those traditions to my own girls.
Recently I had the opportunity to review a new cookbook – Bean Appetit: Hip and Healthy Ways to Have Fun with Food (Andrews McMeel Publishing) which was recently featured on Martha Stewart Radio.
The authors, Shannon Payette Seip and Kelly Parthen are co-owners of Bean Sprouts Café and Cooking School. They offer cooking classes for toddlers and grade school children. The school lets the kids have fun with food while exploring new ingredients. The authors are also currently developing a kids’ cooking show.
Bean Sprouts, a hip and healthy kids’ cafe, opened to much anticipation near Madison, WI in 2007. Bean Sprouts has drawn great media attention for providing a place for families that is both healthy and fun. Under the guidance of a child nutritionist, Bean Sprouts built its menu with the help and enthusiasm of Gale Gand–renowned chef, author, and Food Network star, who believes in Bean Sprouts’ mission.
One of my favorite chapters in the book was the breakfast chapter. The meal that both of my grandkids, ‘Lil Moomette and Slugger, enjoy best is breakfast. Soon they’ll be spending their first overnight with my husband and I, so I paid particular attention to finding recipes that would start their day off right!
Pancakes is a favorite of both grandkids, and “Stick Stacks” incorporates yummy fruit and skewers in an eye-appealing manner.
A great rule of thumb when it comes to cooking with children is keep it simple silly. Foremost, most children have relatively short attention spans. While they want to learn and help mommy out, they also don’t want to have enough time to get bored with the details. Use simple recipes when cooking with children and your chances for success will be much greater than with overly complicated or ingredient intense recipes.
The book is full of whimsical presentations, as well as food-themed games, crafts and activities.
Bean Appetit would like you to help them taste-test some recipes. You can test online recipes for Bean-GO (a healthy twist on Bingo that gets kids to try to new tastes) found in the book. Feedback Form

Cooking School Weekend
When I first got married 35 years ago, I barely knew how to boil water. Over the years my skills have developed, and I’ve hosted many a fancy dinner party for family and friends.
One winter my sister-in-law and I took an Adult Education course in creative cooking.
If you enjoy cooking you’ll be able to further enhance your culinary skills Hilton style the weekend of October 16th and 17th at the Hilton Branson Convention Center Hotel’s Cooking School Weekend.
Guests will be greeted with a Wine Tasting Reception followed by a cooking demonstration with the Hotel’s very own Chef Nathan Read. The next morning Chef Read will teach participants how to prepare the appetizers that were served at the Wine Tasting.
Saturday evening participants will experience a lavish four-course dinner paired with appropriate wines and learn how to prepare the featured meal the following morning. With newly honed abilities, you’ll then be all set to graciously entertain your family and friends this season as the menus will prepare you to be the perfect holiday host or hostess!
This one-of-a-kind package also includes deluxe accommodations at the Hilton Branson Convention Center Hotel for two people Friday and Saturday evening for a reasonable $398.00 plus tax for both nights.
While I haven’t visited Branson, I have stayed in Hilton hotels on previously trips out of town on vacation. Hilton is a recognized first name in hospitality, offering easy access to shops, boutiques, restaurants, a river walk and other attrations after you’ve enjoyed the wine tasting and four-course meals.
The Hilton Branson Convention Center Hotel is an exciting vacation community that is perfect for everyone, located within easy driving distance of Branson’s championship golf courses, lakes, museums and 49 live entertainment theaters.

Mom’s Money Saving Tips: Make Your Own Homemade Beauty Products

Homemade Beauty Recipes
Make Your Own Beauty Products
Ever dream of creating your own line of beauty products? Or maybe you just haven’t found the right line of products for you. Well it may be easier than you think to create your own because most of the ingredients that you’ll need can be found right in your own kitchen. Some are even ready to use with no preparation.
Intrigued? Read on to find out more about making your own beauty products.
Let’s start with the easy stuff.
Four readily available ingredients are:
- baking soda
- honey
- lemons and
- coffee
Baking Soda: You can use baking soda as a hair rinse to rid the hair of build-up from other styling products. It also leaves the hair super clean. Honey has two great uses, to condition dry or damaged hair and a facial mask. It works especially well for skin that is apt to breakout.
Lemons: Lemons can be used to lighten or add highlights to already light-colored hair (just rinse in before going out in the sun). They also work wonders in softening rough, dry skin. While lemons work to make light hair more beautiful, coffee is the ingredient of choice for those with darker hair.
Coffee: Pour one cup of cooled, strong espresso onto dry hair, working it in as completely as possible. Leave on for about twenty minutes, then rinse and dry for shiny, glowing hair.
Mayonnaise: Another item found in the refrigerator that can be used to help manage your hair is mayo. Mayonnaise can be rubbed into the hair as a conditioner. Use just enough to coat the hair, leave for about an hour and wash out. Your hair will be amazingly soft and shiny. You can also rinse your hair with condensed milk in place of your normal conditioner. The protein in the condensed milk will leave your hair extra shiny too.
Tomatoes: Unfortunately, certain things can affect the smell and tone of your tresses. (Think swimming pool chlorine.) To get rid of unpleasant odors in your hair, or that slightly greenish tinge that comes from well water or coloring, use tomatoes. You read that right! Whether sauce, paste, or juice, the acidity in tomatoes works wonders to balance ph levels in your hair, bringing back it’s natural smell and color.
Now that we’ve got your locks looking gorgeous, here are a few other items to help with other areas. Some of the easiest products to prepare at home are scrubs, masks and conditioners.
Avocados: Avocados make a wonderful natural beauty treatment. Simply scoop the avocado out of it’s peel, mash, and gently apply to your face or around fingernails to soften and nourish skin.
Oatmeal: Make your own facial scrub by mixing together 1 cup of uncooked oatmeal and a teaspoon of sugar. To make a mask which works for any skin type, mash up half of the pulp from a peeled avocado along with 1 teaspoon of salt. When you apply the mask, let it stay on your face for about 20 minutes, then rinse off with warm water.
Aloe Vera: To make a really luxuriant conditioner, mix together 2 ounces of Aloe Vera gel, 2 ounces of olive oil, and 6 drops each of rosemary and sandalwood essential oils.
So there you have it. See how easy it can be to make your own beauty products at home? You’ll be so impressed with the results that you may just find yourself making fewer visits to the beauty supply counter in future. Who knows, you might even be able to turn your talents into a work-at-home business!

Fun In the Kitchen: Cookin’ With Kids

Just in time for the holidays!
Are you looking for that perfect present for your child? I know in the past when my kids were younger I struggled every year because my kids didn’t “need” anything and they seem to have had everything they wanted and then some. Every year they got so many presents for Christmas that their eyes started to glaze over and they didn’t know what to play with first.
Then it happened… about 5 days after Christmas they started complaining that they’re bored and they had nothing to do. Does this sound familiar?
I’ve just had the opportunity to check out a digital product that can help keep kids entertained, is educational (but they don’t realize it), is easy on your wallet, and can create some fun family times. It would be the perfect resource or gift for anyone who home schools!
It’s an ebook by Cookin’ Kids that incorporates cooking and fun. The ebook is in 6 sections or themes – The American Diner, Mexican Food, Russian Cooking, Picnics To Go, Native American Dishes, and Hip On Hawaii.
What’s cool is that each theme has recipes, fun facts, safety tips, cooking terms, quotes, jokes, a game, and other website and book suggestions.
Sound good? It is! Visit Cookin’ Kids for more information.
Give the child in your life a unique present this year.
