Last night I participated in the 2nd Session of the Blogging Hot Seminar Series on WordPress, hosted by Kelly McCausey.

The Guest Speakers were the dynamic duo twin sisters, Susan and Janice from 5 Minutes for Mom fame, who host the Ultimate Blog Party every year. Blogging Tips for the WAHM

Since I’ve converted to WP some time ago, I’m constantly trying out different WordpPress Plugins that I hear about. If you’re thinking of switching to WordPress, another compelling reason to use this dynamic blogging platform is its ability to integrate with social media and social bookmarking. Obviously this also equals more traffic and exposure. If you are even the least bit involved in social media and social bookmarking, you understand the value of utilizing a plug-in that will automatically broadcast your content or make it easy for your visitors to share your most recent posts on social networking sites.

From “share this” buttons that display at the top or bottom of your post to plug-ins that automatically tweet when you publish a new blog post, there are plug-ins suitable for all social media and social bookmarking sites. Whether you prefer Facebook and Twitter or you concentrate your efforts on social bookmarking sites like StumbleUpon, Reddit and Digg, there’s a plug-in for you. These plug-ins make it incredibly easy and simple for your readers to share your content and increase your overall exposure.

Here are just a few of the plug-ins that can boost your social media and bookmarking efforts:

TweetMeme – This simple plug-in will automatically tweet the title of your blog post with the web link. Once downloaded and installed, you virtually never have to touch it again. You can see I have it installed in the upper right-hand corner of this post.

Sociable – This highly popular plug-in gives the user more than 100 social media and social bookmarking sites to choose and the ability to order them according to individual preference. A very simple and easy to use plug-in which will allow your readers to share your content with virtually any site they are active on.

Digg This – Similar to the Tweetmeme button, this button automatically detects incoming links from Digg and updates the Digg button to display how many Diggs your post has received as well as make it easy for your readers to digg your blog post as well. If you’re active on Digg this is a wonderful way to increase your “Diggs” and provide a way for them to easily share your post.

Sexy Bookmarks – This plug-in adds a bar at the bottom of your posts that allows you to choose which social bookmarking and social media sites you want to include. See the image above for how Sexy Bookmarks will display on your site.

As your visitor’s mouse rolls over each icon it pops-up and readers can click on it and post your content to that site. With more than 30 sites to choose from, this fun and slick plug-in often shows up in favorite plug-in lists across the Internet.

The latest tweak that I’ve installed is the new Facebook “Like” plug-in which you can see at the top and bottom of this post. Once a reader clicks it, your post is mentioned on the reader’s FB page, increasing the probability that you will gain a wider readership.

The easier it is for someone to share your content with the world, the more they will. These social plug-ins are easy to install and easy to use. They’re a must for all WordPress blogs.

Get The Real Time Advantage

Whether you blog for personal enjoyment, or have branded, monetized and established your blog as a work-at-home venture, every business needs to know how it’s doing. One way to monitor your blog’s “health” is by using comprehensive analytics.

Just as major online retailers use exit surveys, customer feedback forms, suggestion boxes and other devices, without feedback from the customer (in this case your readers) businesses can quickly fall off the radar screen without the owner (you) ever seeing it coming – or being able to stop the slide!

To avoid this happening, I’ve installed Clicky Real Time Web Analytics.

As a WAHM blogger, there are certain things that you should be monitoring on your website. Most of these can be classified as traffic related or server performance related.

Here’s a few to keep in mind:

Traffic Totals You want to know how much traffic your generating. If you’re like me, you’re may be wondering, if I’m writing, is anybody reading? If the line on the graph is heading down, you know you have to find out why.

Referrers It isn’t enough just to know how many visitors you’re getting. You also need to know where they’re coming from. My stats show me that my participation in social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook, Networked Blogs and Ning sites are sending me a tremendous amount of traffic.

Searches Clicky allows me to see what terms and keywords readers arriving at my site have searched for. This is Valuable Information to me, and in turn, since I do a bit of internet marketing, allows me to properly optimize that particular page and get even more traffic.

Pages Viewed Per Visit If people visit only one page per visit, you know you have some work to convince them to visit more pages, (especially those that make you money.)

Pages VisitedSo you threw up on your site something cool as an add-on. How were you to know that other webmasters would link to it and send a whole bunch of traffic your way? Well, now you know, so add some copy to the page to pull visitors into the rest of your site.

Forms Are they all functioning? A good website monitoring service can keep tabs on them for you. The last thing you want is to have lost hundreds or thousands of subscribers because a sign-up form or a Contact form has stopped functioning.

Time of Day Traffic Clicky shows me the time of day that the majority of traffic arrives on my site. I can then optimize the time I schedule my tweets to take advantage of when my targeted readers are most likely to click through to my site.

Download Speed Clear your cache and test your pages. Perhaps those images are a bit large. Take the time to compress them. In a previous post I recommended some wordpress plugins that can help you accomplish this. Remember that some people are on a much slower connection than you are.

Server Speed Are there problems with server speed? There might not be where you are, but maybe on the other side of the world. Global website monitoring can alert you to a transatlantic connection problem, so you can take it up with your web hosting service.

Server Accessibility All the web hosts promise 99% accessibility. But is that for real? Who monitors them? I use and recommend
Mom Webs.

Clicky is customizable, and there’s a free version - however the paid version allows me to see who’s actually on my site in real time. There’s also a WordPress plug-in available where you can monitor your stats right through your dashboard. Another feature I like is the ability to shorten links I use on Twitter. I have the bookmarklet placed right on my toolbar.

Working at home and being a webmaster should be fun!

Savvy Blogging – #Fail

Any blogger who’s savvy by now may have heard the latest controversy going around the blogosphere concerning the “Savvy Blogging Summit” that will be held in Colorado, in July.

If you’re on Twitter, the hashtag #savvyblogging is used to find all tweets pertaining to blogging tips, tricks, advice, and general chit chat.

On occasion, I have been known to utilize the hashtag to dispense my own words of wisdom and what I think are my best work-at-home tips, blogging tips and social media advice that I’ve developed and learned from others (for FREE, through fabulous blogs, forums, emails, etc.) over the last three+ years I’ve been blogging.

I don’t purport to know the young women who will be hosting The Summit, but I do follow these ladies as well as several of their loyal followers on Twitter, and I believe they follow me back.

I first learned of the controversy through Trisha over at Mom Dot. Her original post “Charging for a CHANCE to go to a conference? Huh? has garnered substantial comments, most of which express outrage at the circumstances. The issue that has developed is controversy concerning a $5.00 non-refundable “application fee” to be “considered” to be among the chosen few to attend this Summit. I continue to call it a summit, while the hostesses are calling it a “school.” Schools offer degrees. With a Graduation Exercise. Pomp and Circumstance is usually played as the graduates march in to accept their diplomas.

While I believe that on it’s merits, most conferences or summits that bring together bloggers to share and exchange ideas is a “good thing” as Martha Stewart would say – first charging the sum of $5.00 before you can even access the application is, in my mind, fleecing taking advantage of those who probably aren’t earning a penny yet if they try to monetize their blog.

The goal of my blog is to try to point moms who want to be WAHMs or bloggers in the right direction – and this, clearly is NOT the right direction. It’s a new tactic, on uncharted ground. It is not a common practice of blogging conferences or events, by any means.

Furthermore, any event planner worth their salt would have all their ducks in a row before having a website go public. The site (as of the date of this post) doesn’t even have a roster of who the “experts in their fields” are who will be speaking. Really. Not.Too.Savvy.

Moreover, as for the claim that they are seeking sponsorships for ALL the attendees – For Real? Is their target market newbie bloggers? Mid-level bloggers? It’s difficult enough for established bloggers to get ONE partial or full sponsorship to events such as BlogHer or Type-A Mom Conference. I really have my reservations that they’ll be able to get company(s) to pay for sponsorships for ALL their attendees. Don’t buy into this hype!

I’ve already taken some flack for my position on Twitter, but I’m standing by it. Let the chips fall where they may. I have my standards.

Lori from A Cowboy’s Wife further posits her thoughts on the matter on her post – “$5 for Consideration, Paying for others if Denied” . I’m sure other bloggers, mommy or not, will be speaking up regarding the non-savvyness of what I have dubbed #Ticketmastergate.

Am I serious about my blog? You Betcha. I spend approximately 6 hours per night on it, after working a full-time job during the day, along with other family responsibilities.

And for the record, I have never attended a blogging event … yet.

I’d like to share my recommended URL Shortener for Twitter. You may or may not have heard about it.

Twitter is a micro-blogging forum. You can talk to anyone who wants to listen. It’s a quicker way to get people interested in new product offerings, contests, prize giveaways, blog posts and more.

If you’re a work-at-home mom, this is important in order to get the word out on your brand!

Because Twitter limits you to only 140 characters per tweet, posting a link to your website can be troublesome. There are several services, such as bitly.com or tinyurl.com that let you type in the URL of any site and will then shorten it into a clickable URL that uses fewer characters.

I prefer the new service that Stumble Upon has developed.

It’s called Su.pr

I also recommended that you install the bookmarklet on your toolbar.

Benefits:

* When links are shortened by su.pr, it also adds a StumbleUpon toolbar to the tweet, thereby increasing your chances that your post will get Stumbled (more traffic!)

Actually, we should all try to stumble any tweets we may find interesting.

Simultaneously post to both your Twitter and Facebook accounts

There’s also the ability to schedule your tweets through su.pr I like to schedule my Retweets for optimal traffic-time on twitter and spread them out throughout the day, morning & evening, depending on the tweet and topic. You also won’t be spamming your followers with so many Retweets all at once.

Su.pr adds the ability to track your tweets and see how many click-throughs have occurred.

There is also a su.pr WordPress plugin I use – post to twitter immediately with a shortened su.pr link (instead of bit.ly or tinyurl, etc.)

This is just a suggestion, it was mentioned on Mashable – but I think it’s definitely one worth using.

I recently formed a WAHM Twitter Retweet Group on Google so that any tweets my followers feel are important are immediately posted to retweet. We’re all on Twitter at different hours of the day – so it’s impossible to see what’s going on in everyone’s tweet stream!
