As a parent of two grown daughters, I’m very familiar with teenage spending habits.  One can well imagine the peer pressure placed upon young girls when they’re in middle school and high school.  It seems every Saturday they’re encouraged to make a pilgrimage to the mall.

One daughter has now graduated from college, married, a homeowner and mom of 2 young toddlers.  My second daughter graduates from college in May.  discoverkristin1

As the economic crisis hits our wallet and savings accounts hard, it in turn significantly affects the relationship our kids have with money. As our discretionary spending becomes more tightly controlled, dinner table discussions over that new pair of designer jeans can make pushing veggies on your toddlers seem easy. This proves even tougher when dealing with tweens and teens that want access to plastic, where the set allowance suddenly gets overspent at the mall.

Once the girls were in college and set up in off-campus apartments, they realized the importance of budgeting their money.

discover-financial-services-logoTo help us balance the desire of our kids with the balance in our checking accounts, Discover Card came up with a truly innovative debit card called Current by Discover Card, designed especially for teens ages 13 to 18. The Current Card helps us teach this new generation of children born into a digital age how to manage their finances.

Features include:

  • Helpful Account Management ~ parents can set spending limits; restrict merchant categories; track teen’s spending through online statements, e-mail and text message alerts.  An excellent advantage is that teens can load their part-time paychecks onto the card through direct deposit.
  • Advanced Security Features ~ Current is protected by Discover’s $0 fraud liability, meaning card-members are never responsible for unauthorized charges, whether online, offline, anytime or anywhere.   Current cards that are lost or stolen will temporarily be suspended or deactivated.
  • Meaningful Rewards ~ Teens are eligible for members-only in-store coupons and online discounts when using their card at select restaurants or movie theaters.  Parents earn Discover Cashback Bonus or Miles when they load their teen’s Current Card using their own Discover Card.

The Current by Discover Card provides kids with access to money in the way they want it while still giving us Moms what we need – independent spending by our kids without debt or incurring hidden fees. No more surprise credit card balances from your teen’s “minor” shopping spree.

Excellent article, thank you for sharing.

This seems like a valuable and educational tool for kids. My daughter is approaching tweendom and this will help her to learn spending habits and money responsibility.
