Connecticut Daytrip – Fiber Artisan Event
Connecticut Landmarks’ Nathan Hale Homestead will celebrate the Town of Coventry’s 300th anniversary when it opens for the season by playing host to a weekend-long Fiber Arts Festival. What a great family opportunity to spend a day trip with Mom or Grandmother for a Mother’s Day treat!
Crafting With Fiber Arts
I’ve always been interested in hand-crafted embroidery, crochet and quilting crafts since I was taught by my mom and aunts as a young girl. I have an Etsy Shop where I sell artisan crochet jewelry and fashion accessors, and I have been pinning some fiber projects on my Pinterest Crafts Boards to inspire me to set about taking up this relaxing hobby again and get going with some easy holiday crafts. Some of the craft projects I’ve done over the years include counted cross-stitch art work.
Originally I made an embroidered counted cross-stitch pattern, “The Kiss of the Sun for Pardon” for my husband’s aunt and uncle, as a 50th Wedding Anniversary Gift. Aunt Pookey was an avid gardener. I inherited it upon her passing, and enjoy looking at it and thinking fondly of how much she enjoyed her heirloom roses.
I made this “Bless This House” counted cross-stitch from a pattern I ordered many years ago from Yankee Magazine, and had it customed-framed so I could display it in our very first home as a house blessing!

I also made a ladies’ vintage embroidered handkerchief that my mom handcrafted. I love it because it is so reminiscent of yesteryear when life was more gentile. I’m thinking of giving it to my daughter for her wedding day (someday) to complete the tradition of ”something old.”
Craft Fairs and Festivals
Spinners, knitters, weavers, quilters and other artisans will share their work and visitors can join scores of fiber artists of all skill levels, as the Homestead holds a giant sewing bee. Vendor spaces are available. Raffle, refreshments, children’s activities and demonstrations will be available. Hours for Fiber Fest are Friday, May 18th, 1-6 p.m.; Saturday & Sunday, May 19th & 20th, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. The event is free, but donations are accepted.
Fiber Fest is being held in conjunction with the 300 Years of Coventry Quilts exhibition at the Coventry Historical Society’s Strong Porter House in Connecticut on Saturday from 12-4 p.m. (rain date for the exhibition is Sunday). Admission is $5 per person.
