Halloween in Connecticut

Scarecrows on Main

New England Holiday Traditions

New England lends itself to being particularly inviting in the Fall, and especially during Halloween.

Last weekend was beautiful.  We took a daytrip and  a leisurely stroll along cobblestone sidewalks through a historic town here in Connecticut to view “Scarecrows on Main”.  Each year local civic organizations, schools and arts groups get together and hold a contest for different categories of  “Scarecrows” that are handmade.  Of course, not all are scary – and each year they just seem to get more unique!  Many have themes.

It’s a great idea for tourism, and families come and enjoy the day, patronizing the local shoppes and restaurants, or even bring a picnic lunch – as well as their cameras!

I took so many photos and couldn’t put them all up on Wordless Wednesday, so I thought I’d let you enjoy them here.

How neat! I can see the detail that was put into them! About how many people participate total? Do they let tourist vote too, or only people that live there?

Before moving to Baltimore, I grew up in a very small town- Delta, Pennsylvania. Delta was originally settled by the Welch in the 19th century as a slate quarry town. It has some beautiful historic buildings, original slate roofs, original slate sidewalks. Main street during Halloween is usually full of decorations, everybody loves to celebrate. Lights, spiderwebs, indian corn, hay bales, pumpkins, lots of scarecrows too. It has been many years since I was there, but they used to hold a huge decorating contest, almost the whole main street participated and lots of houses off the main! About 100 houses. Then every Halloween evening there would be a big party at the volunteer firehouse on Main street to pick the winners. They had a team that would go out during the week and take pictures of each house and then they displayed the photos for voting during the party. They would vote on different categories such as ‘Best Decorations – All Natural’ or ‘Man made’, most unique, scariest, funniest, etc.
It was so much fun! We had costume contests, trick or treating, pumpkin picking!

Thank you for reminding me of some wonderful childhood memories and sharing a bit more of New England’s charm!

That’s why I love New England. I miss living up north until November hits. But then it resumes in April.

My town does jacksquat for Halloween aside from a little discount at the ol’ Dairy Queen if you wear a costume. But in this town? Who can tell.

Hi Erin ~ it sounds like you grew up in a delightful town. I haven’t been to PA in quite awhile, but the towns sound similar. Only the committee gets to vote on the scarecrows, and many are taken down before October 31st. The grandkids really enjoy seeing them! Other events take place too, such as lantern tours of the historic graveyard!

Hi Greg ~ I know you’re in Texas but didn’t realize you lived up north – what state? Our DQ’s shut down for the winter up here! I agree, it’s nice up here, but I’m not much for snow – my idea of skiing is sitting in the lodge reading a book with a hot toddy!

That is very unique. We have a lot of events for children and adults. My daughter just went to one last night and had so much fun. It was scary but toned down for children. Held at the famous Weekie Wachee where the Mermaids are.

I miss fall in the Midwest and have longed to go to New England to see the color changing. This looks like it was a really great trip. Our town doesn’t do anything special but our zoo has a Trick-or-Treating extravaganza! It was so packed last year that I bought a membership to get in quicker.

Oh my! That looks like so much fun! I’d love it if my town did anything special for Halloween, but they don’t. The families who live in the area still decorate for Halloween, but that’s about it. Normally for Halloween I decorate more of the inside of my house than the outside. My interior doors get covered with those cartoon halloween characters. Even the front door does. You know what I’m talking about right? If not, it’s something my parents use to do for halloween. It’s like a huge plastic table cover that hangs on your door and it will have a huge vampire on it, or a witch, etc. There use to be a family in the neighborhood who had the BEST Halloween display. Everyone in town would take walks to go see it. But that family moved, and no one as creative has done anything since.
