Lingerie: Or What Do You Do With This Stuff? A Baby Boomer Dilemma

The Old Gray Mare She Ain’t What She Used To Be

Frederick's of Hollywood

Poor poor poor me

Poor poor poor pitiful me

Poor poor poor me

Poor poor poor pitiful me

Poor poor poor me

Poor poor poor pitiful me

…. Linda Ronstadt

I was going through my lingerie drawer thinking it’s about time I updated some of my “necessities.” Yet just the thought of shopping sends me into a tailspin.

Training BraBack in the good old days – the selection of undergarments for gals were pretty limited.

When I was a pre-teen, I started out with a training bra – those teeny tiny bras with expandable stretch fabric for my teeny tiny boobies.

When I got a little older, the undergarments that we wore were bras, slips and garter belts.  Don’t know what a garter belt is?  It held up stockings before panty hose came along!

CorsetOf course, my mom and grandmom wore girdles – which my 101 year old grandmom used to call corsets.

White Pleated Nightgown PeignoirWe Baby Boomers had nightgowns and peignoir sets that looked like they were straight out of movies with Liz Taylor.  Whoever wears those things now?  I had a long, flowing mint green one that I got for my bridal shower which I took on my honeymoon to Bermuda!  Actually, it really was pretty!  There are whole eBay and online stores now specializing in selling vintage lingerie.

Throughout my teen and young adult life, everything was thrown to the wind during the Hippie and “Burn Your Bra” era. Germaine Greer and the Feminist Movement did a lot to empower women!

Then after awhile, it was back to wearing bras again.

Now, whenever I walk into Target or Victoria’s Secret, to me, it’s like being in Frederick’s of Hollywood – not that I’ve ever been in one, I’ve only seen ads in magazines for the store.

I first learned about sports bras, jogging bras and work-out wear from my daughters when they played sports in high school and college.  Who knew?  Only Nike would do.

Camisole TopNow I have to ask my daughters what are those camisole things for – the “girls” are much bigger now!  Do I wear that stuff underneath my tops?  Under a suit?  Do I wear it as outerwear?

What’s a shelf bra?  I get the hang of what shape wear and Spanx is – I know it goes under my clothes, and some of the time it’s a struggle to get in and out of it, especially when nature calls.  I wore two sets of it underneath my Mother-of-the-Bride gown when DD26 got married!

Just to show you how out-of-the-loop I am – I recently bought some new Bikinis.  It said so, right on the label.  B-I-K-I-N-I.  So somehow mine got stuck in the dryer and mixed in with DD22’s laundry.  She found them and called them “parachutes.”  So they were white.  Whatever.  But they WERE bikinis, not granny pants.

I need a personal shopper for this lingerie stuff.

Don’t laugh, you’ll all be in the same boat some day!

No laughs from me and I’m already in that boat. I spend my days either braless or in a comfy sports bra…I just don’t get the appeal of all the extravagent undergarments these days…plus I’m just lazy. :-)

I’m right with you too. When I saw photos of what I looked like at my daughter’s wedding I couldn’t believe that my “girdle” rode down so I just bought a pair of cheap Spanx, forget the name of them. Then I had to add a top to help out. Of course I’ll need another pair as a spare. Tomorrow I’m off to buy bathing suits for an upcoming trip and I’m actually scared.

Love the post, and no laughs in this corner. Even though I am 25, with 3 kiddos I don’t get to spend money on myself on all the adorable lingerie that I would like but your right, now a days there are so many to chose from! Now if I could lose these 15 lbs maybe I’ll treat myself to a nice little number..lol

I’m trying sooooo hard not to laugh but I can’t contain myself! hahaha I soooo get it! Whatever happened to those really cute and comfy “baby doll” nightgown sort of things that were all the rage oh so many years ago? Are those now considered to be “vintage” lingerie? I’m officially feeling very very old now.

Then there is all the media pressure to not wear “granny panties” but to wear nice, cute, “sexy” underwear and bras to keep the flame burning strong in the bedroom. (rolls eyes)

Shelf bras? Yeah I’ve heard of them, especially how shelf bras are what you find with camisoles. err, not very attractive when worn by the more, how should I say… full figure women that are err “top heavy”.

Having “the girls” floating around within that so-called “bra” looks to me more like someone poured JELLO into the “bra” cuz those twin girls aren’t quite so perky and separated as they perhaps once were. ;)

Even though I’m, as Lin put it, full figured and top heavy, I still go without a bra really often like Cat, because I don’t go out too often because of my disability. When I do go out, I wear one of those “old lady” bras (as my kids call it), because it has to support my back and put “the girls” back up where they belong. They went south a long time ago, and I haven’t been able to wear those pretty lingerie type bras for a while. The Hubs used to buy me nice, sexy bras all the time & even he has given up doing that because he knows its beyond hope.

I only wish I could find a bra that fits in a regular store. There are hardly any specialty lingerie stores around and the dept stores think the whole world is smaller than a d cup. Shopping for bras online is impossible and I could never go braless, I even sleep in one. What a nightmare! I envy those of you who can go without.

Well, as a former Victoria’s Secret store manager, I must say you ought to go with comfort. Start with getting fitted properly for a bra, and you can’t go wrong. If it doesn’t feel good, who cares how pretty it is? Comfort is king when it comes to bras, in my book. Good luck! Happy SITS Day and Happy Birthday Week again!

Well I do know what all those different types of bras are. LOL I have to buy the industrial strength (and very expensive) over the shoulder boulder holders. But while I was pregnant and nursing, I mostly wore the camisoles with the built in shelf bras. Not that they were very supportive for the massive girls I grew, but while I was preggers, they were the only thing that was comfortable and while nursing, I didn’t have to fiddle with a nursing bra.

Today as a SAHM, I’m lucky if I can find my actual bra when I need it!
