We are now into Day 5 without electricity in parts of Connecticut thanks to Winter Storm Alfred that struck right before Halloween.
It was a one-two back-to-back punch which made Tropical Storm Irene look tame as far as electric outages go.
Winter Storm Alfred Power Outage
At it’s peak, over 858k+ households were without power, with very little confident information as to when power would be restored. Best case scenario for most now (me included) is Sunday, November 6, 2011.
I have had to throw out the entire contents of two refrigerators and freezers. I have never in 38 years ever had to do this. I am sick over it. Called my insurance agent and it might be covered with a deductible. I took photos.
Schools have been cancelled for one week. They are scrambling how to make up the 180 day mandated school year.
Tempers are flaring and there are long lines and fights at gas stations.
Deaths have occurred from carbon monoxide poisoning.
There are reports of generators being stolen.
Everyone is wondering why the National Guard hasn’t been called out to help with tree clearing.
Connecticut had more outages than all the other states combined impacted by this storm.
Help from other state utility crews has been slow to arrive.
The state residents are asking questions, want answers and deserve answers.

Oh, I am so sorry! I’m in CT too– and my job had a carbon monoxide issue . :/ I was lucky though at least not to loose power.

I totally understand and feel your pain. We were lucky that while this storm dumped 21″ of snow on us, we didn’t lose power once. (We did lose it for 11 days during the ice storm).
Our town is pretty good with tree trimming and we have our own light company.
The amazing thing is that losing power for this many days is “new”. Is the weather that widely different now? I’m not so sure…..but I hope some heads are going to roll for this as far as your power outage is concerned.
Hang in there. We’re thinking of you and hoping power is restored much sooner than Sunday!

Thanks Kristi, yes, you were lucky! Connecticut is now looking into recommendations for aggressive tree-trimming standards. I prefer beautiful trees over ugly ones, however I still like to keep the lights on.

Hi Amanda, I think naming winter storms is a new thing now. Winter Storm Alfred was named after “Alfred Hitchcock” since it fell over Halloween. Very appropriate!

Hi Jill, life is back to normal somewhat; the towns are picking up the tree limbs; the State has been declared a disaster area for relief, and winter hasn’t even started yet!
