Connecticut Farm Barn and Pasture – Wordless Wednesday

Off The Beaten Path

Brown Farm Barn in Winter Snow Portland Connecticut

Earlier this month there was a tragedy at a clean energy power plant being built in Connecticut along the Connecticut River.  My husband and I were out for a ride in Portland, just across the narrowest part of the river from Middletown, where the plant was located.   We were able to see the remains of the plant from the road.

Along the way with nothing in site except a small baby eagle, soaring overhead looking for dinner, we passed this quaint farm barn.

I didn’t have my digital camera with me, so this was the best I could do with my cell phone.

Next month I’m giving away a ticket to BlogHer10 in New York City. If you win, you might want to stop by and visit New England and see my neck of the woods! Check out my post for more info!

Farm Fence and Pine Trees: Connecticut Winter – Wordless Wednesday

Connecticut Countryside

Connecticut Farm Fence in Winter

This photo was taken in Windsor, Connecticut – the oldest town in the state.  It reminds me of the poem by Robert Frost - “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.”

Where do you think the path leads?

Shade Tobacco Sheds in Winter – Connecticut – Wordless Wednesday

Red Barns

Connecticut Shade Tobacco Red Shed Barn in Winter

Connecticut is known for farming and growing shade tobacco.  Some of you may recall (ok, most won’t) the movie “Parrish” that came out in 1961.  I was just a kid, but I remember seeing it.  It starred Troy Donahue, Claudette Colbert and Connie Stevens.  Many parts of the movie were filmed on location, in Windsor, Connecticut.

Windsor is the oldest town in Connecticut.

This photo (and others to be posted in future Wordless Wednesdays) are of the tobacco sheds in Windsor.  In the summer, the sides of the sheds open up to dry the tobacco leaves.

Connecticut River Back Roads – Wordless Wednesday

Where the Eagles Soar

Connecticut River Back Roads

During the winter months you can often see Eagles soaring over the Connecticut River.  Depending on how cold it gets, the river will ice up.

There’s many country back roads that parallel the river from Essex to Saybrook, and over the years, we’ve traversed them all four seasons to see the beautiful views here in Connecticut!  You’re also able to see some beautiful estates during the winter, since the leaves on the trees are gone!

This photo was taken along one such road in Essex.

Red Barn In Snow – Connecticut Winter – Wordless Wednesday

Winter Wonderland
Red Barn in Winter - Connecticut - Wordless Wednesday

I enjoy taking pictures of old historic barns. Many have been restored to their original splendor.  Some are re-purposed as artist lofts or home offices.

This was taken in New Hartford, Connecticut on our way out to a surprise birthday party for a family gathering.

Over The River and Through The Woods – Wordless Wednesday

Bringing Home the Tree

Bringing Home the Tree

Our family has had a real tree for over 30+ years. When the girls were little we would visit various Christmas Tree Farms in Connecticut and chop our own. My charming son-in-law, originally from Vermont, is a traditionalist, and grew up with real Vermont Balsams and Firs! It’s nice to see my oldest daughter and her family carrying on the tradition!

Connecticut Colonial Fall Door Decorations

New England Simplicity

Connecticut Colonial Fall Door Decorations

Most of my regular readers are well aware that Fall is probably my favorite season of the year.

Recently I’ve taken an interest in photography, and am trying to focus on some themes.  When I was in Bermuda, I enjoyed taking photos of the iron gates in St. Georges.

Several weeks ago, I shared historic Connecticut barns, and last week  I shared Scarecrows on Main.   I enjoy participating in Wordless Wednesday, and since I’ve become a prolific photo-taker, I can’t always put all of them up!

Halloween in Connecticut – Scarecrows on Main

Halloween in Connecticut

Scarecrows on Main

New England Holiday Traditions

New England lends itself to being particularly inviting in the Fall, and especially during Halloween.

Last weekend was beautiful.  We took a daytrip and  a leisurely stroll along cobblestone sidewalks through a historic town here in Connecticut to view “Scarecrows on Main”.  Each year local civic organizations, schools and arts groups get together and hold a contest for different categories of  “Scarecrows” that are handmade.  Of course, not all are scary – and each year they just seem to get more unique!  Many have themes.

It’s a great idea for tourism, and families come and enjoy the day, patronizing the local shoppes and restaurants, or even bring a picnic lunch – as well as their cameras!

I took so many photos and couldn’t put them all up on Wordless Wednesday, so I thought I’d let you enjoy them here.
