Bean Appetit: Childrens Cookbook Review and Giveaway

Hip and Healthy Ways to Have Fun with Food

Bean Appetit Childrens Cookbook

Bring Kookiness to the Kitchen

As any grandmom knows, kids learn through emulation – watching and imitating the actions of others.  That’s why it’s a good thing to always strive to be a good example.

For me, I learned to cook by watching my mom and aunts who passed down many of the traditional Polish recipes that I learned to love as a child.  I’ve since passed down those traditions to my own girls.

Recently I had the opportunity to review a new cookbook – Bean Appetit:  Hip and Healthy Ways to Have Fun with Food (Andrews McMeel Publishing) which was recently featured on Martha Stewart Radio.

The authors, Shannon Payette Seip and Kelly Parthen are co-owners of  Bean Sprouts Café and Cooking School.  They offer cooking classes for toddlers and grade school children.  The school lets the kids have fun with food while exploring new ingredients.  The authors are also currently developing a kids’ cooking show.

Bean Sprouts, a hip and healthy kids’ cafe, opened to much anticipation near Madison, WI in 2007. Bean Sprouts has drawn great media attention for providing a place for families that is both healthy and fun. Under the guidance of a child nutritionist, Bean Sprouts built its menu with the help and enthusiasm of Gale Gand–renowned chef, author, and Food Network star, who believes in Bean Sprouts’ mission.

One of my favorite chapters in the book was the breakfast chapter.  The meal that both of my grandkids, ‘Lil Moomette and Slugger, enjoy best is breakfast.  Soon they’ll be spending their first overnight with my husband and I, so I paid particular attention to finding recipes that would start their day off right!

Pancakes is a favorite of both grandkids, and “Stick Stacks” incorporates yummy fruit and skewers in an eye-appealing manner.

A great rule of thumb when it comes to cooking with children is keep it simple silly. Foremost, most children have relatively short attention spans. While they want to learn and help mommy out, they also don’t want to have enough time to get bored with the details. Use simple recipes when cooking with children and your chances for success will be much greater than with overly complicated or ingredient intense recipes.

Bean Appetite Childrens CookbookThe book is full of whimsical presentations, as well as food-themed games, crafts and activities.

Bean Appetit would like you to help them taste-test some recipes.  You can test online recipes for Bean-GO (a healthy twist on Bingo that gets kids to try to new tastes) found in the book. Feedback Form

Kidorable Children’s Apparel Review & Giveaway

Functional and Fun

Kidorable Lucky Cat Rain Coat

Kids Rain Coats

Both of my grandkids attend preschool now, which means going out in all kinds of inclement weather.  Right now they’re wearing winter snow jackets, but soon spring will be around the corner, and that means ‘April Shower Bring May Flowers’!  They’ll be in need of rain coats!

My charming son-in-law is from Vermont, and the kids often visit their grandparents up there in the spring – which is mud season!

Kidorable LogoI’ve had the opportunity to review some absolutely fun, trendy stylish rain gear for kids from Kidorable!  Started in their efficiency apartment by Liping and Jonathan Domsky, Kidorable was conceived to “create children’s apparel and accessories that are both functional and fun.”

The grandkiddos were all excited when they tried on the new rain coats we were sent.

Kidorable Lucky Cat Rain Coat‘Lil Moomette got to try the Lucky Cat Raincoat, while Slugger tried on the Fireman Rain Coat, both of which came with matching hangers.  Each rain coat had a hood for stormy days, and colorful, fun designs on the jackets that the kids delighted in.

Kidorable Fireman Rain CoatI liked that the Rain Coats were reflectorized which makes it easier to see the kids if they’re out at night. The closures were easy to snap shut and open – although I did caution ‘Lil Moomette not to pull at the closures. I remember what happened when her own mom was young trying to get out of her rain coats!

Slugger is a bit too young to try to take is own coat on and off.

All styles are made out of PVC and have a comfortable polyester lining, and are machine washable in cold on a gentle cycle.

We have a full-time team of quality control experts assuring that our factories meet our high standards. We also regularly test the quality of our products in internationally recognized labs for lead, phthalates and other toxic substances. All Kidorable products meet or exceed all voluntary and mandatory product safety standards.

Kidorable offers sizes from 1T-6X (and larger) and offer matching ensambles:

  • Rain Coat
  • Umbrellas

Snow What Winter Olympics? Find Me at the Lodge

What Kind of Snow Bunny Are You?

2010 Winter Olympics Logo

After the blizzard the Mid-Atlantic states and Washington D.C. experienced this week, we in Connecticut were lucky we missed it.

But our turn in New England is coming on Wednesday!

How do you handle snow?  Does your inner-child come out?  Maybe you always dreamed of participating in the Winter Olympics! Do you rush off to go skiing, snowboarding, skating or sledding? Do you hunker down inside, or maybe go on a cruise or fly south like the snowbirds from up North do?

I just took this little test – and if you read through my posts and 101 Random Things About Me – you’ll see it’s right on the mark! Look for me inside the Ski Lodge!

You Are a Snow Kitten

You like snow in small doses. You find snow to be comforting, and you love to snuggle up under a blanket of snow.

You’re not a big fan of the hassles of snow. You’re happy to see it come, but you’re also happy to see it go.

Go ahead and venture out in the snow from time to time! Throw a snowball or make a snow angel.

You have an inner snow bunny inside you, and it’s time to let that bunny play.

Guide to Walt Disney World With Preschoolers: Review and Giveaway

Disney Tips for Traveling With Preschoolers

Beyond the Attractions: A Guide to Walt Disney World with Preschoolers (2010)

Plan a Magical Vacation That is Perfect For Your Family

I’ve had the opportunity to review a new book that takes all the guesswork out of planning for a trip to Walt Disney World with preschoolers in tow.

Disney WorldMy oldest daughter fondly remembers our family vacation to Disney World when she was younger.  I saved for almost a year, and paid for the entire vacation in cash.

The girls were 7 and 11 at the time, in 1994.  We went towards the end of August when the rates were somewhat less expensive, and stayed directly on the grounds in Florida at the Polynesian Resort.  I don’t mind the heat since I live in New England.  Actually I thrive in it!

Now that my daughter has two toddlers of her own, she’s been making “noises” about wanting to revisit Disney with their kids, who are 1 and 3.   Both my daughter and charming son-in-law are extremely close to both sets of parents.  They’d really like that the grandparents can all join in together for a memorable family trip.

Disney WorldAs a parent, you already know that you don’t want to have to carry your preschooler around in your arms all  day. You couldn’t possibly make it through the day!  You also can’t expect your child to walk all day long.

Beyond the Attractions:  A guide to Walt Disney World with Preschoolers by Lisa M. Battista (BookSurge) is a definite must-read book.

Lisa Battista answers common and not-so-common questions in Beyond the Attractions such as advance reservations; the best time to visit; sleeping away from home and more that will assure that your family vacation is enjoyable and stress free:

Strollers – Strollers are not only welcome at Disney World, they’re highly recommended. In fact, Disney World rents strollers for a reasonable fee.  My suggestion would be to tie something on the stroller, such as a brightly colored ribbon to help identify it from all of the other strollers in the park.

FastPass – You don’t want to spend your entire Disney World vacation standing in long lines. This can be avoided by using Disney World FastPass. FastPass can be obtained from kiosks located near the rides that accept FastPass. This doesn’t mean that you get to immediately move to the front of the line. It’s more like scheduling an appointment for the ride later in the day – at which time you actually will move to the front of the line. In the meantime, you’re free to go enjoy other sites and rides around the park.

Many other tips to help you maximize your hard-earned vacation dollars are included in this reference guide for parents, by a parent.

Start planning your next vacation!

Melissa and Doug Slice and Bake Cookie Set Giveaway

Inspirational Toys for the Kids

Melissa and Doug Slice and Bake Wooden Cookie Set

Wooden Toy Set

For the grandkids’ birthdays this past summer my husband and I bought a Little Tikes outside playhouse which included a kitchen and attached picnic table.  My son-in-law set it up in their backyard, and both kids, ages 1 and 3 enjoyed it well into the fall.

My granddaughter, ‘Lil Moomette, really enjoys following in her mom & dad’s footsteps by pretending to play “kitchen.”

Gumpy Lump LogoI’m delighted to have the opportunity to let you know about a new wooden play food set manufactured by Melissa & Doug, from Gumpy Lump.

The Slice and Bake Cookies set is both educational and inspirational as it inspires pretend play and introduces children to the world of baking and might encourage them to be the next Pillsbury Dough Boy or Betty Crocker!

Inside the wooden set are:

  • 12 cookies and 18 colorful toppings
  • spatula
  • knife
  • cookie sheet
  • kitchen mitt

Melissa and Doug Slice and Bake Wooden Cookie SetEven when choosing make-believe toys for my own girls, I always looked for items that would stimulate their own imaginations.   “Baking Instructions” are included, but they’re not intended to be used with real food.

What I like about Melissa & Doug toys is that they use non-toxic coatings and meet or exceed all U.S. toy testing standards.

If you’re looking for a gift for the kids, grandkids, homeschool or run a daycare, put this activity toy on your list!

Triaminic Thin Strips – Coupon

Sick Day Guideline

Triaminic

Cold and Flu Symptoms in Children

When my daughters were younger both were enrolled in family daycare while I worked. My daycare provider was a mom of grown children, and had plenty of experience in recognizing when my girls weren’t feeling quite up to par.

As any new parent or parent will learn, children are very susceptible to illnesses, in part because their immune systems aren’t quite fully mature.

Breastfeeding is a recommended way of providing some immunity to common illnesses, however with so many moms returning to the workforce, most children are weaned by the time they’re 1 year old.

Children also have a habit of exploring the world around them with their mouths and their hands. Anything that comes into contact with their mouth and hands can potentially cause an illness.

The good news is that the more your child is exposed the stronger their immune systems will become, and their ability to fight off infection in the future.

This past fall we’ve all heard about the H1N1 virus.

Now that winter is here, as parents and grandparents we also must recognize symptoms of illness in our children, and know when to take action.

Colds/Cough – Cold and coughs are usually caused by viral infections, thus must be spread by person to person contact, not through the weather alone. Common symptoms of a cold include a stuffy nose, cough, possible sore throat and occasionally a temperature. Colds can become more severe and result in bronchitis, pneumonia and ear infections. Signs that a cold is becoming worse and may need medical treatment include green or yellow nasal discharge, fever lasting more than one day or a persistent and wheezy cough.

Flu – The flu is characterized by headaches, chills, muscle aches and a high fever. Respiratory symptoms may also develop, and a feeling of fatigue which may last for several weeks after initial symptoms. The flu is also spread from person to person contact usually with respiratory secretions of someone who is sick. Antibiotics can’t treat the flu.

Recently I heard through Debbie at We Speak Media about how Triaminic, a leader in children’s over-the-counter cold and flu symptom medication, has put together an online Cold & Flu Symptom Tracker, based on data from SDI Fan® (a source used by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).  I checked for my state, and Hartford, Connecticut is currently experiencing moderate cases right now.

Sick Day GuidelinesTriaminic offers a downloadable sick day guideline which can help parents whether to send their child to daycare or school, or whether to keep them at home.

When dispensing medication to children, remember to always read and follow medicine labels exactly, to ensure that the child receives the right dosage. Single-use products like Triaminic Thin Strips® provides a pre-measured dose of medicine that dissolves quickly on the tongue, so parents know their children are receiving the recommended amount for their age.

Triaminic CouponYou can download a free coupon for $1.50 off TriamincThin strips, an easy way to administer cough and cold medicine to your child.

Visit Triaminic.com and to find out the level of cold/flu activity in the city nearest to you.

Family Vacation Plans – Create A Medical Travel Kit

Over Air and Sea

Be Prepared When You Travel

Many of my friends are retired now, and have become snowbirds traveling south for the winter – to Florida, or on Caribbean cruises.

Not to be left out is the younger set – young families heading to Disney or skiing trips for February Vacation and college students getting ready to travel on the traditional coming-of-age pilgrimage of Spring Break.  Many college students opt for a semester abroad.  The travel bug strikes all age groups and generations.

The last thing on your mind when you’re getting ready to travel is the idea of getting together a medical travel kit.  You have enough on your mind already, right?  But being prepared with a medical kit on your travels could mean the difference between a good time and an unplanned side trip to a medical facility or emergency room.  Believe me, if you’ve read about my vacation to Bermuda, you’ll know what I’m talking about!

Responsible travelers should always consider keeping a well-stocked medical traveling kit —whether you’re taking a short hiking trip on your favorite trail or an exotic vacation abroad. A medical travel kit doesn’t have to be bulky and heavy:  all you need is some organizing magic, a checklist to make sure everything is stocked inside, and the discipline to keep it in your travel bag at all times.

When traveling abroad, always remember that some of the medication you take may not be available in other countries. Before traveling to another country, always remember to ask your doctor about any medical substitutes for your medication (in case you run out).  If it’s a prescription, make sure you refill your prescription before you go and that you’ll have enough to cover the entire trip.

Consider packing these items when you’re traveling:

  • Allergy medication. If you are prone to allergic reactions, then antihistamine is a must-have in your medical kit, especially as you may encounter food or other things that irritate you. Keep a couple of antihistamine tablets (or your preferred allergy medication) with you when you travel. You may also want to pack some anti-allergy topical medicine (like Calamine lotion).
  • Digestive medication. Let’s face it – one of the best things about traveling abroad includes sampling the local cuisine. In line with this challenge, you should keep in mind the food you ingest may not sit well in your stomach.  So pack a trusted digestive medication. Keep a handful of oral hydration solutions and loperamide (anti-diarrheal) just in case diarrhea strikes.   I actually gave some to my oldest daughter to keep on hand when she and her friends went to Cancun, and she thanked me afterwards!  You may also want to keep antacids for when your stomach acid acts up, and a laxative for those uncomfortable constipated days. You may also want to ask your doctor for medication that can help with nausea and vomiting.
  • Sleep is vital, and if you short yourself on it, you can never really make it up.  The older we get, the more trouble our bodies have recovering from sleeplessness and other conditions.  So get at least seven hours of sleep every night, and feel better– Many people have developed sleeping problems and rely on aids such as CPAP Machines and CPAP Masks.
  • Sunblock. A bottle of SPF 15-30 sunblock should be enough to protect your skin from harmful UV rays.

As all mothers and any good Girl Scout or Boy Scout knows – Be Prepared!

Santa's Workshop Elf Wickham Park Connecticut

Wickham Park in Winter overlooking Hartford, Connecticut

We took the grandkids, ‘Lil Moomette (3) and Slugger (16 months)  to see Santa at Wickham Park in Manchester, Connecticut on Sunday.

It’s so magical there, and my most favorite place to visit!  It’s not commercialized, like the shopping malls.  The park, high up on a hill overlooking Hartford,  is beautiful in winter – all decked out with colored lights, and we went when the sun was starting to set!

Santa’s helpers, the elves were there, along with train sets, a roaring fire in the fieldstone fireplace; Mrs. Claus was passing out cookies, and there was a huge Christmas tree that reached the top of the cathedral ceiling in the log cabin house!

Happy Holidays from my family to yours!
