Soon summer vacation will be over and parents will be focusing on Back-To-School shopping.  I’d like to let you know about the extensive selection of educational special needs childrens toys offered at Gummy Lump.

Earlier this year I had the opportunity to review the magnificent Melissa and Doug Slice and Bake Cookie Set available at Gummy Lump.

My youngest daughter is an Early Intervention Associate and currently finishing up her Masters degree in Rehabilitation and Disabilities Studies with a concentration in Pediatrics and Developmental Disabilities.

My daughter currently works for a non-profit agency, and travels throughout the state doing home visitation consulting for her young clients in the Birth-To-Three program.

I frequently find my youngest daughter  in the living room raiding my grandkids’ toy box for toys  that she thinks would facilitate development for her clients.   As  she makes clientele  home visitations, introducing new material to the children will stimulate interest in the lesson plan of the day that she has prepared.

It isn’t uncommon that in her position as a Birth-to-Three counselor, my daughter unselfishly will spend her own money to purchase toys for special needs  for the kids.  Families and school system budgets are curtailed because of the economy, and funds simply aren’t available to purchase new materials.

The kind folks at Gummy Lump have graciously offered me the opportunity to have my daughter choose a toy to share with her special needs clients.

My daughter would like to share with you her review of the Melissa and Doug Progression Puzzles, and reasons for choosing this product to work with her clients:

I work with young children who have special needs and chose the Melissa and Doug Progression Puzzles because I believed they would be a good learning tool for the children I work with.  They help introduce forward chaining to children who are low functioning and Autistic.

I thought this group of puzzles would be a good tool to teach with because they provide visual aides for the children to follow along with, while also working on fine motor skills and object imitation.

When introducing the puzzles I begin by first having the child complete the puzzle, and then numbering the pieces.  The child then places the puzzle pieces in the base using the correct order, while also counting 1-2-3-4-5-6 so they can understand the steps to making a pizza, peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and eating a banana.  When I begin working on the puzzle I fully prompt the children so they know which piece goes where without making an error, and eventually fade the prompts so the child is completing the puzzle independently.

By completing this puzzle as an assignment, the children can understand how to complete certain activities in their correct order.  They eventually learn not only how to complete a puzzle, but how to chain an activity from first to last.  The first step to making a sandwich would be to grab a plate, bread, and the peanut butter and jelly.  The pictures on the puzzle pieces provide great visuals for the children to follow as well.

I would recommend this puzzle because it comes in a group of three so the children can have three different ideas of how to chain activities.  It can be done forwards or backwards, and is also great for the child to gain fine motor skills by placing the small puzzle pieces in the base puzzle.  The three puzzles are small and easy to carry around as well so they can be transported between houses with minimal effort, and are easy to store.

The Cape has to be my most absolutely favorite place to be.

We’ve been going up since before the kids were born, and this year I went camping with my oldest daughter, charming son-in-law, and the two grandkiddos. (No mosquito bites this year!)

Sigh

We’ve stayed everywhere from Falmouth to Wellfleet, and each part is so unique for what it has to offer.  I must say our favorite part is what’s referred to as the Outer Cape – from the elbow at Chatham on up to Provincetown.

Wild About Summer

This summer, Underwriters Laboratories (UL), a leading product safety testing organization, provides useful tips to help keep you and your children safe around play sets and the pool.

After a winter spent indoors, most children can’t wait to run off all their pent up energy – and most need not travel any farther than the backyard. Swing Sets, Playscapes, jungle gyms and pools offer up hours of summertime fun, but can turn potentially dangerous if you do not know what to look for.

When my kids were younger, my husband and I made certain to sign our kids up for swimming lessons. The kids took weekly lessons, and contained even when they went to the YWCA camps and private camps throughout the summer.

Our family always enjoyed taking vacations to local beaches and spent quite a bit of time up at Cape Cod. When my youngest daughter was old enough, she became certified to be a lifeguard, and worked for our local town pools. Many times she was hired by moms to be a lifeguard at backyard pool parties, and also to give private swim lessons.

To keep your family safe while having fun this summer, UL is offering the following tips:

• At any water spot, the 10/20 rule states an observant parent should scan the pool every 10 seconds, and never be more than 20 seconds away from the area. Supervision, along with a basic knowledge of CPR, stand among the staples of pool safety.
• At any playground, watch for enclosed spaces, protruding bolts or tree stumps, and comb through the sand box before your child digs in to help avoid risks presented by glass shards, animal droppings, or other hazards.
• Before installing a play set, find a suitable place for the set free of any dangerous obstacles like cable wires or tree branches and follow the building instructions closely. Laying safety materials (such as mulch or rubber tiles) can help make the entire area more secure.
• To avoid constant worry at the pool this summer, construct a tall fence, keep the area around the pool clear of tree limbs and other debris, and clearly mark all drains and filters. Store rescue devices nearby, drain wading pools after use, and always remove toys from the pool so children don’t try to play with them without supervision.

UL and Disney even produced a cute video featuring Timon and Puumba from the Lion King teaching kids how to stay safe while swimming during the summer, and all year long.

Now that summer weather is finally rolling around here in New England, it’s time to get the kids out of the house, have  them become active, give them some fresh air and explore the great outdoors and and go on a backyard bug safari!  June 26th is the Great American Backyard Campout – and a perfect time to plan fun activities for those backyard slumber parties with Backyard Safari Outfitters!

That means I’ve been married for 36 years now!

And then add +4 years for dating before we got married …

If only I was on my way to a Bermuda honeymoon again!  Back then, everyone went to Bermuda.  We stayed at the Sonesta Beach – which has since been destroyed by Hurricane Fabian.

Let see, in this order -  1 mortgage, 1 dog, 2 kids, 1 dog, 1 cat, 1 rabbit, 1 son-in-law, 2 grandkids … No money … a lot of mouths to feed!

In my mind, this Baby Boomer still looks the same …

Baseball plays a huge part in my life.  Both my daughter and charming son-in-law played college sports.

Over the 35 years I’ve been married I’ve managed to take and collect quite a few photographs. These days it seems we all keep our photos either online or on our computers.
