I’m officially on vacation  and am taking this opportunity to post a 5-part “Retro” series….about me.

I’m opening up a little window here … normally I’m a pretty private person, but I think that it’s about time that my readers get to know a little bit more about “grandmom.”

Now I wasn’t born this age, although my kids think I was.  Once upon a time, I was young, like many of my readers, with dreams and aspirations, like so many dewy-eyed young things.

Life and experience though, sometimes makes you jaded, and sometimes you just have to let go of those dreams.

So, I’m going to be sitting on the Veranda this week, sipping what-eva I feel like.  Sometime it might be lemonade, and sometimes it might be well, shall we say – stronger.

This month commemorates the 40th anniversary of Woodstock.   The festival was held in Upstate New York at Max Yasgur’s farm in 1969.  I was 17 years old then.  Although I appreciated the music genre, there was no way in hell that I would be allowed to make the trek to that festival, even if I wanted to go.

In the late 1960s, I recall the great musicians of Woodstock – Richie Havens, Arlo Guthrie, Joan Baez, John Sebastian, Canned Heat, Greatful Dead, Creedance Clearwater Revival, Sly and The Family Stone, The Who, Jefferson Airplane, Joe Cocker, The Band, Blood Sweat and Tears, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young … and on and on and on

All those groups I grew up listening to – still do, and I’m sure many of you recognize those familiar songs that perhaps your parents listened to over the years.

But they were from MY Generation, and how in the world did 40 years go by so damn fast?

The Beatles This is me, when I took my first trip abroad to England in 1969 to visit a penpal for 2 weeks and stayed with her family – the Beatles were pretty popular then, and I thought I was so cool.

Now here’s my high school graduation picture from 1970 – like the Sassoon haircut that Twiggy made popular?  I wore that hairstyle for years – even after I grew it longer, I’d always go back to it.

Here I am in my freshman year of college  with the gals from my dorm floor – (end, far right) I went to an all-girl’s college in Massachusetts – right smack in the middle of the Vietnam War era – Peace Movement.

So if you’ve ever wondered where I get my Feminist leanings from, wonder no longer.  Women my age fought hard for the rights that all the young gals of today take for granted.  (See previous posts if you’re curious)

shows that this Baby Boomer grandmom wasn’t born looking like I do now – I’ve earned every gray hair and wrinkle (though dang few) that life has thrown at me.

    What an awesome post Cindi! It was a blast seeing these photos of you. I remember my dad had all kinds of records from the Woodstock era and I was fascinated with them although we didn’t have a working record player for me to hear them.

    Great post! Sometimes I think I was born in the wrong era. LOL I love all the 60′ music. I even started dressing like a hippie in HS, much to my Father’s disliking.

    My era, the 70’s & 80’s, had the US festival and Up With People! LMAO I loved those pictures. You were (and still are) quite the looker. I have no idea what to post this week for the Blackout, but I am sure I will come up with something.

    Cindi, I love this post. 40 years ago I was only 9 years old, but I remember hearing all about Woodstock and all the great bands that would be there.

    Like you, I still listen to all my favorite groups and bands, including CCR and many of the others you mentioned. I grew up primarily interested in anything coming out of Motown, but my brothers were heavily into Classic Rock and got me hooked on it too.

    Now I know even more why I like you! Although I was a kid back then, I grew up with a sister who is 11 years older than me. I was a hippy kid :) And as I grew I continued to maintain those hippy beliefs. I visited Woodstock many times as a teenager and have always wished I was able to attend the real concert.

    You are one HOT (grand)mama!!! I ADORE all that music… even though I was born in 1965, I listened to that music because my parents liked it, so I grew up listening to it. It is one of the things that The Hubs (who is 24 years older than me) have in commen, our love of music. My mom has two younger brothers who went to Woodstock, and told me stories about it ~ sensored, because my mom wouldn’t let them tell me EVERYTHING. :-)

    I am in the same generation and loved the hip hugger pants (although mine weren’t bell bottoms. I did have a pair of green and white striped bell bottoms though. Nice hair style too!

    How adorable were you! Isn’t it interesting how so much of the ’60s and ’70s styles are back now and you could almost put a picture of a modern-day woman right next to those pictures and it’d be tough to tell the difference.

    OK, well maybe not a 2010 woman, but definitely a 2005 woman. :-)

    My mother also graduated high school in 1970. Very cool.
