Dr. Hippo Series Childrens Health Books series

Since I’m a mom of 2 grown daughters, ages 26 and 22, and now as a Grandmom to two toddlers, over the years I certainly have developed quite a bit of experience with baby and toddler products, books and toys.  That’s one of the reasons I say I share my perspective of products from aBaby Boomer Grandma Who’s Been Around the Block.”

As you can imagine, I’ve spent quite a bit of time on the telephone with our pediatrician over the years, as well as many hours in doctor’s office waiting rooms with sick kids.  The last hurrah came last spring, when my youngest daughter was starting Spring Break from college and I had to make a snap decision whether she should go the emergency room.  As it turned out, Mom knows best, and darling daughter had an emergency appendectomy on St. Patrick’s Day.

Now, I’m going to let you know how excited I am to have the opportunity afforded by Mom Fuse to review the Dr. Hippo Series of 5 Award-Winning children’s picture books written by a pediatrician and published by The Hippocratic Press“Managing Care Through Children’s Literature that will entertain, educate and comfort both parent and child when a child is sick.

The Hippocratic Press was founded by Dr. Charlotte Cowan with the primary mission of publishing medical children’s stories that entertain, educate and reassure both parent and child.

A board-certified pediatrician, Dr. Cowan worked with parents and their children for many years before leaving her busy practice at the MassGeneral Hospital for Children in Boston. She knows childhood inside out, and she has taken care of children both when they have been sick and when they have been well-but stumbling over developmental issues.

sadie-coverThe Dr. Hippo Series is an entire set of five stories about childhood illnesses-earaches, colds, fevers, sore throats and gastroenteritis. Each story is a picture book and each has a separate Parent Guide that answers common questions like how to help a child feel better at home and when to call the doctor. The subjects include cold, fever, ear infections, sore throat, and vomiting and diarrhea.

peeper-coverDr. Cowan’s philosophy behind writing the books was that every sick child she had ever taken care of had been brought in to by one parent –or two– who were concerned about what is wrong with their child.  She feels that children and parents belong together–especially when a child is sick–and as a pediatrician she felt that she had something to say to both parent and child.  Thus, by writing the books in such a manner as to help sick children feel better by teaching them a little bit about the illnesses, the Dr. Hippo Series was born.

The 5-Book Series includes:

  • Sadie’s Soar Throat
  • Katie Caught a Cold
  • Peeper Has a Fever
  • The Elephant With The Big Earache; and
  • The Moose With Loose Poops ~ Dr. Cowan’s most recent book

elephantHealth-care is a huge concern of the American public, especially in today’s economic times.

The books of The Hippocratic Press are distributed by the National Book Network and are available in your favorite local bookstore. They are also available online through Amazon.com

The illustrations in the books are so beautifully detailed, you really have to see them!  There are approximately 30 pages in each book, and each comes with a jacket cover.

moose2When you open the books, the inside page has “This book belongs to…” as a place to write the child’s name.  I think it’s a terrific idea, as it makes each child feel unique and special.

When I was reading “The Moose With Loose Poops” I was impressed how the story emphasized the fact that the sick child had to drink two glasses of water, (especially important for dehydration) and be read two stories.

katie-coverThe back of each book includes a pocket/pouch with a fold-out laminated pamphlet Guide for Parents.  The pamphlet is written by Dr. Cowan and is specific for each book.  The Moose With Loose Poops contains the “Getting Through Gastroenteritis” Guide.  The format is question/answer, including:

  • How Will I know That My Child Has Gastroenteritis?
  • When Should I Worry/Call the Doctor?
  • How Can I Help My Child Feel Better?
  • What About Medications?
  • When May My Child Return to Daycare or School?
  • And more!

As a grandmom, I still have almost all of my children’s books from when they were little.  I highly  recommend this series for any parent or grandparent to have on hand.

The series would make a wonderful addition to your book collection.  If you’re looking for the perfect gift for someone special, this is it.

  5. i’d like to win these books because it will help my kids explain what’s wrong and vice versa. my favorite would be Sadie’s Sore Throat since it would help the kids verbalize when their throats are sore

  6. I would especially like Katie Caught a Cold because my daughter is always getting a cold or getting over one. These books would be great to explain lots of things that crop up in childhood and it would help answer my daughter’s questions in a non-scary way that is age appropriate.

  9. I love the idea of these books! The illustrations are wonderful and they deal with issues that I never see in childrens book. The fact that they were written by a doctor and also have a parent’s guide is the cherry on top! I like Katie Caught a Cold, because kids ALWAYS have cold, and the Moose with Loose Poops because tummy troubles are also common. Besides, how can you resist that title!

  14. The one I would like is Katie Caught A Cold. My granddaughter is always getting colds and this would be great for her. The main reason I would love to win this wonderful series is for my 2 year old grandson. He has a lot of medical problems and it would really help him to know that others get sick too. He would be able to look through the books while his mommy reads to him and he would be able to relate what hurts or how he’s feeling. Thank you!

  21. I’d love to win these for my little boy. Our family is notorious for Earaches so the “Little Elephant with the Big Earache” would be awesome to have. I love books that are educational/informative as well as entertaining. If I don’t win I’ll probably buy them anyway!

  22. The Little Elephant with a Big Earache looks good. I would like them for my office. The children are often very scared to see the doctor.
