Kicking Back with the Grandkids and Enjoying Farm Day – Lutz Children’s Museum

Where did summer go so quickly?  We spent a magnificent September Labor Day Weekend 2011 with the grandchildren celebrating Farm Day for the Lutz Children’s Museum.

Lutz Children's Museum Farm Day

Proceeds from the event were to benefit the Lutz Children’s Museum in Manchester, Connecticut, which is always great if you’re looking for something to do in Connecticut  or fun places for kids.

The event featured arts, crafts, a farmers market, games, hay rides, 4-H animal petting zoo area, barn tours, live fiddle music, dancing and games.

Family Farms

Over 2,000 people attended the event held at the 211 acre Fish Family Farm in Bolton, Connecticut.  My grandson Slugger is really into anything having to do with cars or trucks so we took the kids on the tractor-pulled hayride.  Volunteers from UCONN explained that the agricultural farm hosts 50 Jersey cows (known for producing the best milk) and that the farm makes their own farm fresh ice cream on the premises which they in turn sell to Royal Ice Cream.

While their parents were in New York at Yankee Stadium, both ‘Lil Moomette and Slugger enjoyed participating in the face painting and bounce house fun.  There were also spin art Frisbee, a pie-eating contest and tie dye t-shirt making activities for the older kids.

All the local agricultural fairs have started and the huge Woodstock Fair was also going this weekend.  Grandpa and I felt, however, that this was a perfect choice for the grand-kids because most of families seemed to have children in the 2-10 year old age range.

One of the sponsors of the event was the Town of Bolton Fire Department, and Slugger, who’s 3 had a chance to sit in a real fire truck!

There was plenty of food, chips, hot dogs and burgers to be enjoyed by all.  The lines were long for soda and water, as it was a beautiful, hot Labor Day weekend.

We hope to visit again next year and support this worthwhile event.

How did you spend your Labor Day Weekend?
