Martha’s Vineyard Daytrip | Things to Do in Falmouth Cape Cod

Share

It’s always nice to get away in the summer !  Cape Cod is a favorite place of ours and Martha’s Vineyard can be an easy daytrip on the ferry from Falmouth.

We’ve been vacationing in Falmouth Massachusetts on Cape Cod for years (home to the famous Falmouth Road Race) and enjoy the ambiance, laid back feel of the town.  It’s both scenic down-to-earth, yet chic and trendy at the same time. Plenty of things to do for everyone, kids included.

There’s local beaches, a beautiful harbor, and of course, the Island Queen Ferry (passengers only) for a quick getaway to Martha’s Vineyard.  Martha’s Vineyard has for years been a favorite vacation destination to Presidents, from John Kennedy, Bill Clinton, and now the Obama family.

The ferry holds 515 passengers and the ride from Falmouth to Oak’s Bluff Harbor on the Vineyard takes about 45 minutes. There are two large parking lots, but get there early to secure a spot.

Once you arrive in Oak’s Bluff, there are ample ways to get around the island – bicycles to rent if you don’t bring your own, taxi tours, rental cars, and scooters.  Of course, there’s the old fashioned method of – walking !  Which we did, and put on about 4-5 miles in the course of a few hours.

Interesting sites to see are the Campgrounds, with their famous gingerbread architectures, shopping (Vineyard Vines was a definite must-see).

There are plenty of dining options in Oak’s Bluff – you can bring a picnic lunch, or stop at Nancy’s for a waterfront view of the harbor.  You might even see some famous  celebrities !  One year we caught up with Carly Simon at the Hot Tin Roof.

For the Kids, there’s plenty of things to do like riding the famous Flying Horses Carousel, the oldest in the country !

So, there’s plenty of summer left, even though Labor Day is around the corner.  Of course, Cape Cod and the Vineyard are fun anytime of year, and perfect for a Fall getaway too !
